One of my specialty areas in plant-based medicine includes using plant stem cells, referred to as Phytoembyrotherapy and Gemmotherapy, for targeted support in my practice. I have seen the truly fantastic restorative and healing effects this type of botanical medicine can inspire first hand, and it is a powerful remedy I use in my practitioner toolbox.

Phytoembryotherapy is a branch of botanical medicine that uses the embryological tissues of the plant for healing purposes. The buds and young shoots, also known as plant stem cells, are much like our own stem cells and contain vital information on the plant’s genetic blueprint.

By looking at the plant’s physical nature and characteristics, including structure, color, soil, environment, and atmosphere, we can begin to determine the uses and healing gifts it will provide to our bodies. Plant stem cells have the ability to drain morbid waste and acids out of our body through our channels of elimination, allowing the body to regenerate its tissues.

The plant’s embryonic tissues, the buds and shoots, are referred to as the meristem, or plant stem cells, and are rich in phytochemicals beneficial to our bodies; these include hormones, enzymes, RNA (nucleic acid), trace minerals, polyphenols, and flavonoids. These can all be considered key elements or the spark plugs of life.

As a traditional naturopath, I believe that nature is intelligent; all plants have the ability to adapt to what the body needs. You may have heard someone describe an herb as “adaptogenic”; this is what that is referencing. The plant’s embryonic tissues have very specific properties to help regulate and modulate the body’s programmed responses.

Man-made or manipulated synthetic isolates (drugs, isolate vitamins, minerals, etc) can only work in way or one direction, which means they can never regulate/modulate or correct anything long term. Side effects result from isolated, synthetic, chemical drugs which are unnatural for the body to metabolize and process.

In nature, all plants have natural adpatogens which contain medicinal elements that act as synergists, antagonists, chemical buffers and with ALL purposeful complex compositions in tact.

Here is an example of this principal: Bilberry is rich in the mineral Zinc, but also Copper. Copper and Zinc are antagonistic but when occurring naturally in plants, they are synergistic. If Zinc levels are too high in an individual, then the Copper in the plant will help to strip, or decrease the zinc.

Phytoembryotherapy has a significant therapeutic advantage over other herbal medicines because the active ingredients in embryonic plant tissues are more concentrated and diverse. Many unique embryonic phytonutrients aren’t available once the plant matures and chlorophyll (plant blood) is formed because they’re used to support the plant’s growth period.

By macerating these plant components with water and alcohol, we can extract the plant’s healing energies and active ingredients for our healing use.

Some plant constituents are so powerful they’re used to make prescription medications like digoxin.

Through individualized assessments, consults, and data collection, a bio-individualized plan can be put into place to address the client’s needs at a deeper, systemic, root-issue level. Plant stem cells are very effective and gentle and work very well together as a synergistic approach, so often, clients need a few targeted plant stem cells to begin resolving a healing crisis. Every client is unique and therefore protocols must be carefully recommended.
