Health and wellness have always played a very integral role in my life; as a youth, well into my early adult years, I played high-level competitive sports, and was my team’s captain on a Junior Olympic Volleyball team; striving to reach optimal performance, strength and ability was something that shaped me not only as an athlete, but as a person who wanted others to find their best selves physically, mentally, and emotionally as well.
At a young age, I was diagnosed with a kidney condition that put me through countless tests, needle pokes, surgery, and medications. The doctors were unclear as to what was causing my kidney dysfunction, and so a barrage of “hopeful” treatments and medications with debilitating side effects were administered. As a young person experiencing these side effects, I was not only fearful as to what was happening to my body, but I also ended up not being able to continue with my volleyball career. With no real answers, the doctors hypothesized that I had caught the strep virus at some point and it laid dormant in my system, ending up attacking my healthy kidney tissue. While I have 100% function, I leak protein.
Fitness and taking care of my body have always been that friend that swoops in to save the day when things in life are sketchy, feel out of control, or I need to feel grounded and most like myself. When I was younger, the present I always asked for every year for Christmas was a gym membership. I began to read and research about therapeutic nutrition, stress management, and lifestyle practices, including proper sleep and hydration. After several months of focused self-care, my “condition” changed course, and my kidneys’ “leak” began decreasing significantly.
This experience changed the way I viewed my health and my body; while I had previously been so focused on performance and athletic achievements, I now had a relationship of respect and awe for what my body was capable of and what it does for me every day to maintain health and optimal wellbeing. Pursuing healthcare as a career was an obvious next step for me.
My journey began in fitness and nutrition, as I am a Master Trainer with the ISSA, Specialist in Fitness Nutrition, have owned my own private studio and trained in gyms, was an Adjunct Professor for Exercise Science and Kinesiology, worked on content development and educational resources for the ISSA, and was published as a subject matter expert and editor in many fitness and health publications.
This evolvement continued over a ten-year span, with me continuing my career in holistic medicine and circling back to my root desires in wanting to understand how to help others support their bodies through natural interventions; stimulating the body to do what it knows how to do best– heal and recover.
Becoming a naturopath encompasses my journey of health thus far and is at the center and core of understanding for me of our bodies from a holistic perspective, helping and supporting it to thrive from a natural healing standpoint—movement, nutrition, micronutrients, mechanics, restoration and recovery, hydration, and optimizing performance in our daily life activities are what a good naturopath strives to help others find.
